A warm welcome to the Year 1, Class 1A webpage! We are so excited to journey through this academic year together, guided by our 'Aspire' core values of aspiration, service, peace, integrity, resilience and excellence and enjoyment. Our class is led by Miss Alexander, ably supported by our wonderful Teaching Assistants, Mrs McKay. In 1A, we strive to create a welcoming and supportive environment, treating one another with dignity as we learn, grow, and serve. Important information: 

PE days: Monday and Tuesday. Pupils can wear their PE kit/tracksuit every Friday.

Phonics and Reading: In Year 1, we strive to support children in becoming happy, enthusiastic readers who have a good understanding of what they have read. We teach phonics daily, using the Monster Phonics Scheme, and we also have reading sessions focusing on phonics application, vocabulary, comprehension and prosody. 

Each week, the children will read both individually and as part of a group to practise these key skills. At the end of the week, the book will be sent home for further practice. We ask that you look after these books and return them the following week.

We are Writers

This half-term, we have been exploring the story of Hermelin. The children have been writing a retelling of the story. 

We are Scientists

In Year 1, we have been learning about the human body and our senses. We have been discovering how our nose smells and been describing different smells using vocabulary such as sweet, smoky and fresh. 

We are Musicians. 

Year 1 enjoyed listening to the live Opera, Children practised their singing whilst watching it live! 

We are Designers 

Year 1 planned, designed and devoured a fruit salad! 

We are Computational Thinkers

Class 1.2 loved exploring different robots as part of our workshop with High Impact. They learnt about programming clear instructions for the robots to follow.
