School Council
This year, we are focussing on our environment and the CAFOD Live Simply Award.
During our school council meetings this year, we have discussed our desire to protect green spaces in our school, with the aim of promoting love and consideration for our planet. Children have explored the value of spending time outdoors for wellbeing, and we have workshopped ideas to allow for more outdoor learning opportunities. We have discussed child-led fundraising ideas and have reached out to local charities such as Learning Through Landscapes for further inspiration and fundraising support to make our ideas a reality.
The CAFOD Live Simply Award has guided our council discussions this year. Inspired by the words of Pope Francis, this campaign encourages schools and parishes to take responsibility for their role in protecting our planet and all the people we share our world with. It encourages us to appreciate the simple things in life that bring us joy, echoing our council's sentiment of prioritising outdoor time for our wellbeing.
In spring 2 and in the summer term, we hope to spend time as a council making our outdoor spaces even better, and hope to focus on improving our recycling across the school.
Take a look a this video explaining the purpose of Live Simply.
Last year
Last year, we explored the United Nation's 'Convention on the Rights of the Child'. This convention lead to the creation of 42 articles, explicitly defining the rights that all children should have. In term 1 of this year, we learnt about these 42 articles and some of our councillors watched presentations providing more information at the Archdiocese of Liverpool. In term 2, another group of councillors will attend an event at Liverpool's Town Hall, during which children will form their own opinions on how best these articles can be implemented in our school and beyond.
At our first school council meeting with Mr Wood last year, we discussed new ideas to help improve the school we live in. Together, we came up with three aims, which are:
- Encourage children to bring healthy snacks for break time.
- Promote outdoor learning
- Encourage 'wear your own clothes days' to promote charity days
